history

Quirindi Rugby Union seems to have started, officially, sometime in 1885. The games played were few and far between and it was a version of rugby that usually included a fight, a dispute over the rules and some abuse of the referee. Quirindi has no official records from that auspicious beginning and very little was written about the local competition until the 1890’s when the number of players and teams began to increase considerably.

jThe evidence for that first kick off comes from various newspapers of the time (the only surviving records): On May 23, 1885 The  Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner’s Advocate reported that Quirindi Rugby was ‘about to be inaugurated’.

On June 6, 1885 the Australian Town and Country Journal recorded ‘a football club has been successfully inaugurated in Quirindi and challenges have been received from Murrurundi and Gunnedah clubs’.
